Spanish and French ships were of bigger tonnage and with the same guns. Their ports were higher above the water giving them advantage
over the British. The Squadron usually consisted of 3 divisions: the advance-guard, the center and the rear-guard. The division included up to 15
warships. Besides the squadron of the late XVII century had also hospital ships and special life-saving ships for the drowning. Special attention was
paid to organization of reconnaissance. This was provided by fast ships like yachts and galliots.
